“Life is
beautiful and it would not have been beautiful without schooling”.
True it is. Our lives are beautiful, lovely,
satisfactory and successful because we have got good schooling, and we had been
provided with a golden opportunity to have our studies in good schools and
those ‘Alma Mater’ has shown the path of leading to the stunning winnings and
approving victories. The schools exert great influence upon us. They shape our
character, mould our mental attitudes and fashion the basic principles of life.
Thanks to our schools and parents!
GOOD SCHOOLING
Good Schooling is essential for every society and
individual. It is life itself but not a preparation for life. Man has various
qualities. School life is but a preparation to face the challenges that the
bigger school called ‘world’ will
offer us when we are left out on the road of life land walk on.
For many of us, the days spent in schools are the
happiest and the best days of our life. The very memory of school days fills
our minds with longing memories of happy days of yester years.
School is a meeting place of students and teachers.
In this temple of learning, a student learns the ‘life-skills’ of living in the
in the society needed for the later part of life. Forgetting their joys and
sorrows, they read together, play together and sit together, cherishing and
shaping their future dreams.
School is the right place for the fulfillment of
the youthful desires. Students take part in games and sports, drama, essay
competition, song and debate competitions etc. School also gives the foundation
for the budding poets, scientists, writers, doctors, engineers, painters and
musicians. It is in school that the students enjoy the affection of their
teachers.
Teachers act as the guides and guardians to guide
them on the right path. In school, teachers try to remove the evils from the
students by sowing some seeds of good qualities in them.
In library, debate class and in competitions,
students get proper scope to improve their knowledge and style. Above all, in
examinations, they try to show their brilliant performance.
School has definitely a healthy influence upon
students. But some students indulge in bad company and get away from the impact
of their teachers. Those students miss the charm of their school life.
TEACHERS’ ROLE
Students when they are entering into the school in
the morning are crying vigorously. But they are getting out of the school
enjoying. It reflects that something that is not interested to the students is
happening in the school or the school does not provide the love, belongingness
and safety to them as like their home.
If the teacher is unsuccessful, then for most
children, school life means
- Most irritating moment – morning alarm
- Most difficult task – to find socks
- Most dreadful journey – way to class
- Most lovely time – meeting friends and playing with friends
- Most tragic moments – surprise test in the1st period
- Most wonderful news – Teacher is absent
Role of A Good Teacher
Teacher is the second parent to a child and their
responsibility at school is in no way lesser than the mother at home. I wish
that I narrate a story
A teacher by the name Mrs. Thompson entered
the class for the first time and she had this habit of starting the class by
saying “Love You All.” But she knew she was lying, because she could not feel
that love for one of the students in the class who was very unkempt, untidy and
there was nothing in the child that drew attention for Mrs. Thompson who was a
little indifferent to the child. She picked him for every negative example and
ignored him for all the positive reasons. That year she had written the
progress report for the first quadrant and it was the system in the school that
the Headmistress had to countersign every progress report.
The headmistress called for Mrs.
Thompson and told Mrs. Thompson that a progress report
should report some progress. It should make a parent feel my child has a
future. The way you have written the progress report for TEDDY (that is how he was called) parents will give up on Teddy.
Mrs. Thompson immediately said, there is nothing I can do. I have nothing
positive to write about that child. Immediately the headmistress asked the
administrative staff of the school Teddy to trace the old year progress reports
of Teddy and send it across to Mrs. Thompson’s class.
Mrs.
Thompson saw the third standard progress
report and the final remark was written, Teddy is the brightest child in
the class. She was stunned by what she read. She saw the fourth standard progress report and progressively all the
remarks suggested that Teddy’s mother was suffering from terminal cancer. She
is not able to give the attention she used to give to Teddy and it is just
beginning to show up on the performance of Teddy.
The fifth standard progress report
read Teddy has lost his mother and along with it himself. He
desperately needs help, otherwise we will lose this child. By then, there were
tears in the eyes of Mrs. Thompson. She looked at the Principal and said I know
what to do and she went back to the class.
She walked into the class and again from the dais she looked at the
class and said love you all. But she knew she was lying, the love she was
feeling for TEDDY right now was far
far greater than the rest of the class. She decided that she was going to change
her approach. For every positive reason, Teddy’s name was called. There was no
more a negative reference to the whole thing.
The last day of the school came. All the
children had brought some gifts for the teacher. There was only one gift which
was wrapped up in an old newspaper. Somehow, with the sense of a teacher could
knew that this must be from Teddy. She opened it up first. A half used perfume
bottle and a bracelet from which a few stones had already fallen were there.
The whole class laughed knowing it was from Teddy. But without saying anything,
Mrs. Thompson just took that half used perfume bottle, sprayed it on her, and
wore that bracelet. With a smile Teddy
told, now you smell like my mother. This is the last perfume that she used
before she left me and this is what was removed from her body before she was
taken into the coffin.
One year later, at end of the year, there was a letter on Mrs.
Thompson’s table. I have seen a few more teachers, but still you are the best teacher I have ever seen.
With love, Teddy. Every year till the end of school Mrs. Thompson used to get
this letter from Teddy, I have seen a few more teachers, but you are the best
teacher I have ever seen, Teddy. Years rolled by, they lost contact. Somewhere
an agent traced Mrs. Thompson who had retired by now and handed over a letter
and the letter signed Dr. Theodore,
Ph.D. Teddy had gone on to become a Ph.D. and the letter read “I have seen
many more people in life Mrs. Thompson, this is your Teddy, still you are the
best teacher I have ever seen.
I am getting married and I
cannot dream of getting married without your presence. Along with it were
enclosed to and fro flight tickets. Mrs. Thompson could not resist. She no more
had the perfume bottle, but she still preserved the bracelet. She wore that and
went to the church. She was going to sit in the last row but a volunteer
identified her and ushered her right to the front row. And right in the front
row there was a seat with a card written mother. Theodore personally asked Mrs.
Thompson to sit in the chair and whispered, “you are the closest to my mother
that I have ever experienced, and whatever I am today it is because of you
mam”. The wedding happened and after the wedding Theodore introduced Mrs.
Thompson to his newly wedded wife “without
her I wouldn’t be where I am today.” There were tears in Theodore’s eyes.
Mrs.
Thompson told the newly wedded woman, “Without
him I would have never realized a teacher must first be a mother to every
student of hers and only then a teacher.” So I would like to say to the
teachers, “When you go back to school, there may be a Teddy in your class and
you could be that Mrs. Thompson. Go back as a parent who can also be a parent
and be a turning point in the life of your children.”
Hope, now we have understood the value of the role
of teachers!
IMPORTANCE OF GOOD SCHOOLING
I. In the life of an individual child
1.
Develops the Inborn Potentialities:
Schooling helps the child to develop the inborn
potentialities of child providing scope to develop.
2.
Modifies
the Behaviour:
Schooling helps to modify the past behaviour through
learning and through different agencies of education.
3.
Develops
the child as a whole (All-round Development):
Schooling aims at the all round development of a child-physical,
mental, social, emotional, and
spiritual.
4.
Prepares
for the Future/Life:
After completion of schooling the child can earn its
livelihood getting proper education, which has productivity. The education
should be imparted according to the own interest of the child.
5.
Develops
Personality:
The whole personality of the child is developed physically,
intellectually, morally, socially, aesthetically and spiritually. He is
recognized in the society.
6.
Socializes
the child:
Man differs from beast. Man has reasoning and thinking
power. Man tries his best to adjust with his own environment through education.
7.
Build Character:
School is not just about learning concepts; it is also a
place where a foundation can be built for becoming upstanding adults. Every
school should set a tone of respect, honesty and genuine kindness for all
students. Whether they like it or not, teachers are role models for students
and can provide examples of good character every day in the classroom.
Students’ notice what teachers do, say, tolerate, and how they handle
challenges. However, character building can also be done proactively through
planned actions and activities within the classroom. These classroom activities
will encourage students to develop and adopt quality ethical principles and
behaviours that can last far beyond the classroom.
8.
Give
the skills of dealing with the environment:
In the school, a child comes
across different students with different attitudes and character and this helps
them to deal with the world at large and helps to adapt themselves in the
future.
9.
Achieves
of Self-Realization & Self sufficiency:
In the school the students are able to realize their full
potential either by the help of the teacher or friends and they learn to be
sufficient with what they have.
10. Makes the man civilized:
Schooling makes the child sociable and civilized. He makes
friends with different students of varying religion, caste, social status etc.
II. Importance
of good schooling towards society:
1.
Social Change and Control: The
society is never stationary. It is progressive and dynamic. The child lives in
society. It is the social environment where the personality of the child can be
developed. The old traditions, customs are preserved and transmitted with the
situations, which are ever changing. We should not think or believe in the
blind beliefs, which are hindrances towards our development. Schooling helps to
walk with the development of science and technology.
2.
Reconstruction of Experiences: Education is a life-long process. Life is education
and education is life. Life is full of experiences. One cannot live with his
past experiences. So, education helps the individual to reconstruct the
experience and adjust with the environment.
3.
Development of Social and Moral Value: Society is always in tension with narrowism. There
is no social or moral value. Now the man is behaving like an animal. Animality
can be changed with moral education. Schooling teaches the moral value and
social value like co-operation, tolerance, sympathy, fellow feelings, love
affection, respect towards elder, helping the poor and needy persons.
4.
Providing Opportunity or Equality: Indian
Constitution has introduced the term ‘equality’ because we are not getting
equal opportunities in all aspects. Schooling teaches us to give equal
opportunities in all aspects irrespective of caste, creed, colour, sex and
religion.
III. Importance
of good schooling towards nation:
1.
Inculcation
of Civic and Social Responsibility: Education helps to make rising generation to understand its rights
and duties as citizens of a democratic country.
2.
Training
for Leadership: The leadership
quality of the individual is developed when he participates in all spheres of
social, political, religious and educational activities.
3.
National
Integration: We are living in
a country having diversities in respect of colour, caste, language, diet,
dress, habits and physical environment. Educational integration leads to
emotional integration. Education trains people for unity, not for locality, for
democracy and not for dictatorship. School serves the most important end of
educating the man.
4.
Total
National Development:
Education helps for bringing about total national development by developing its
all aspects i.e. social, economic, cultural, spiritual, moral, educational,
etc.
Therefore, really schooling is an essential
ingredient for all ages and stages of the life of an individual, society as
well as the nation. Schooling can be a real panacea for all social evils.
CONCLUSION
School life is very important part of one's life,
because it provides opportunity for study and discipline. Besides these, the
school life is a preparatory stage for entering public life. School plays an
important role in widening the outlook of students. Virtues such as perseverance,
sincerity, truthfulness, tolerance, discipline and obedience developed in
pupils. School provides opportunity to the students to be disciplined. They
show discipline in classroom, play ground, hostel, and library at other places.
It is commonly presumed that formal schooling is
one of several important contributors to the skills of an individual and to
human capital. It is not the only factor. Parents, individual abilities and
friends undoubtedly contribute. Schools nonetheless have a special place, not
only because education and ‘skill creation’ are among their prime explicit
objectives, but also because they are the factor most directly affected by
public policies. It is well established that the distribution of personal
incomes in society is strongly related to the amount of education people have
had. Generally speaking more schooling means higher lifetime incomes. These
outcomes emerge over the long term. It is not people’s income while in school
that is affected, nor their income in their first job, but their income over
the course of their working life. Thus, any noticeable effects of the current
quality of schooling on the distribution of skills and income will become
apparent some years in the future, when those now in school become a significant
part of the labour force
A person becomes perfect with education as he is
not only gaining something from it, but also contributing to the growth of a
nation. To achieve this there must be a collective and cooperative effort of
students, teachers and parents.
WISHING
I wish that this school is marching towards success
of the all students in collaboration with teachers, parents! I am really happy
to learn this school has a very good beginning on this Foundation Day! I
appreciate the management for taking
time and energy to orient the teachers on the ‘Importance of Good Schooling’
and the fruit of this well-organized orientation is achieved only when you
begin loving your students, profession, your school and above all yourself.
Wishing you all the best in all aspects of
prosperity and success, and thanking the Management for providing this golden
opportunity of meeting the school kids, teachers and parents, May I seek God’s
Blessings on all of you.
Thank You..!
